How to calculate machine utilisation
Utilisation compares the hours a machine was used with the hours you considered available for use. Define both consistently before comparing machines or periods.
Choose one period and a definition
Pick a week, month or other period. Decide what counts as used hours and available hours for your purpose, then record both for the same machine and period. For a group, add used hours and available hours across the same machines before dividing. Do not mix engine hours from one period with scheduled availability from another.
Use the formula
Utilisation (%) = used hours ÷ available hours × 100
For a simple illustration, if a machine was used for 30 hours out of 40 available hours in the same week, utilisation is 30 ÷ 40 × 100 = 75%. These are example numbers, not a customer result or an industry target.
Available hours must be greater than zero, and used hours should not exceed the available hours under this definition. If your numbers do not fit, check the period and how each was counted rather than reporting an invalid percentage.
Interpret with context
A percentage alone does not establish profitability, suitable staffing or whether a machine is ready for a particular job. Compare it with your own plan, maintenance schedule and the way the equipment is used. Verify any contractual, legal or site-specific requirements with the relevant people; this calculation does not assess them.
Calculate it yourself
The free utilisation calculator uses this formula with the hours you enter and applies no industry benchmark. It does not pull live telemetry or automatically calculate usage from TenAdapt equipment records.
